December 22: Sushil Kumar was clearly the big star of the year, the mighty little Hercules, who became the first Indian wrester to win a World Championship – he achieved this remarkable feat in Moscow in September with a 3-1 win over Alan Gogaev of Russia in the final of the 66 kg freestyle event. He also won the gold at the Commonwealth Games; he missed the Asian Games due to injuries, but by then he’d done enough to lay a claim to being the best Indian sportsperson of the year. *** Wrestling: Men's 66kg Freestyle Sushil Kumar of India after wining the Gold medal, at Indira Gandhi Sports Comlex, in New Delhi.

And then there were three. As we write, comes the news of boxer Vijender assuring himself of at least a bronze which would give India a record three medals for the first time ever. He defeated Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in the quarterfinal of the 75kg category bout. He will now take on 2007 Pan American games gold medallist Emilio Correa Dayeaux of Cuba in the semifinal on August 22. Earlier in the day, Sushil Kumar wrestled his way to a bronze medal after defeating Leonid Spiridonov, from Kazakhstan, to earn his place in history at Beijing 2008 Olympics. Sushil became the second Indian wrestler, after K D Jadhav who won a bronze in the 1952 Helsinki Games, to win an Olympic medal. Before this India had never won more than one individual medal in any Olympic or more than two in all categories.
