You’ll agree that as the economy totters, unemployment rises to 25 per cent and airwaves are full of the anguished cries of the hungry and the abandoned hurtling towards a new low, the least our privileged stars can do is provide chorus to a ditty that peddles that worn-thin homily: ‘this too shall pass’. Guzar Jayega is composed by Jatin Sharma, with Amitabh Bachchan, as pictured here, voicing the solemn narration. As many as 60 celebrities sang along, from Raveena to Sunny Leone, from Babul Supriyo to Yuvraj Singh and Leander Paes: “be strong…be safe…love….” We applaud in earnest.

Against a pale blue sky, they clap for those who are putting themselves in grave danger in this hour of crisis—Abhishek, Aishwarya, little Aaradhya, other family-members and the patriarch, Amitabh Bachchan. The latter apparently re-tweeted a post on the deleterious effect of state-sponsored clangour on the virus on March 22-an amavasya. Can’t believe your ears? You won’t if you’re a fan, but do investigate and decipher these revealing interstices of unreason. You’ve got time on your hands.

The Durga Puja pandal is a smorgasbord of happiness, and piety. You can’t fake it. Like the joy in Rani Mukerji and Karan Johar’s sindoor-smeared faces; like the devoutness in Mr and Mrs Bachchan’s eyes; like the jig Nusrat Jahan did to hubby Nikhil Jain’s drumrolls—in a crimson sari, vermillion on her forehead and hair neatly tied in a bun. The svelte Bengali actor-MP’s dhak dance is her first as a married woman.

That measured gait, that voice, those expressive eyes, the lanky-legged half-steps set to music...all this created Amitabh Bachchan’s gigantic screen presence. His career had a plateau and a sheer drop, but was saved by a sharp and steady switchback in style and content. Big B is now our elderly and wise superstar—the unsurprising recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke award.

At first glance, this could have been any Hollywood acting great in disguise, softly launching into a great spell—Al Pacino, Donald Sutherland, Erland Josefsson, Laurence Olivier...take your pick. It happens to be Bachchan, in the upcoming Chehre. Hope the director will give Big B moments of gravity.

Doesn’t he seem to have owned the part already? An ageing patriarch, we imagine, with fading powers but swagger intact, a gamchha slung rakishly around his neck, portending a ready offer of offence taken. In accepting a role in Uyarntha Manithan (Tamil), Amitabh has done the best thing in years—leave his footmark amidst one of the most fanatical film-lovers in the world.

Why, you might ask yourself, did they not zoom into the grinning faces of this father and son duo when covering the France vs Belgium semi-final. But, in St Petersburg, they only had lenses for fans who had personal investment in the outcome of the game. Point is, like so many of us, Abhishek and Amitabh, too, had lots to cheer about. At half-time, they were even.

Didn’t she stand out for being the only family-member disinclined towards acting? What made Shweta Nanda take the inevitable plunge into the family trade isn’t known, but there she was, playing a caring daughter to an aged Amitabh, in a commercial for a jewellery brand.

One striking thing about the tributes pouring in for Sridevi is how genuinely heartfelt they all are, and not the usual platitudinous declarations of greatness. Along with Kamalahaasan and Rajnikanth, the one huge star who was deeply affected by the untimely death was Amitabh Bachchan, her co-star in Inquilaab, Aakhree Raasta and Khuda Gawah. As she was being flown back on Feb 28, Amitabh tweeted in anguish: “Get back..just get back...to love”

Their last outing before the camera was the ill-fated Ajooba, but Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh would hope that 102 Not Out recaptures the magic of Naseeb and Amar Akbar Anthony. A centenarian father who puts his 75-year-old boring son in an old age home? Why, this has the kernel of a laugh-riot. We’ll wait for May 4.
