Varun Gandhi speaks to the media outside his residence, in New Delhi. Criminal charges were filed against Varun after a footage emerged of him comparing a rival Muslim politician to Osama Bin Laden and threatening to cut the throats of Muslims during a political rally in Pilibhit. Varun, the great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, however, denied making the comments, saying the footage had been tampered with and that he was a victim of a political conspiracy.

AP Photo/Manish Swarup

Varun Gandhi, son of Maneka and late Sanjay Gandhi, landed himself a criminal case slapped by the Election Commission for an inflammatory speech against Muslims. At an election meeting in Pilibhit Gandhi had said, "This is not not a 'Hand' (Congress symbol), it is the power of the 'Lotus' (BJP symbol). It will cut the head of ....... Jai Shri Ram." He also said if anyone raises a hand against Hindus and if they thought Hindus were weak and leaderless, he would cut his hand. Gandhi, however, claimed that the video footage of his speeches had been tampered with.

Friday 22 OctoberSo Mr Naidu said goodbye to all that and the BJP called in its old Mr Fix-It as the new chief once again. He of course promptly headed off to Nagpur to meet the big daddy of the Sangh. Vijaydashmi is meant to be big for the Sangh, and the RSS chief was in fine form, going left, right and centre at, well, the Left, the Right and the centre. So return to Hindutva it is. Surprise? Oh, well, one poet politician might not quite be the flavour of the season, but there was the new recruit Varun Gandhi very much in attendance. Now Varun has been given lot of importance by the Sarsanghchalak, K.S. Sudarshan, with many hours long meetings, and while he wasn't quite saluting RSS-style yet, the videshi aunt has been sent a very firm message.
