For decades, Bollywood has been copying Hollywood/Western pop and art in a most rude fashion (eg, four floppy-haired boys belting out a swinging number in a movie from the ’60s). Such blatancy is banished with the advent of the search engine—now, a poster of Judgemental Hai Kya can safely lift from the work of Hungarian photographer-artist Flora Borsi. Aren’t we proud of our creative guys?

The successive stages of the making of Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika has been greedily recounted, so the release of the trailer came on its downward crest. But it’s not only Kangana’s proud Laxmibai with her bevy of attendants, there are Tatya Tope and Bajirao II to contend with too.

A cracker of a film which underlined woman power in Indian cinema like never before. In the maverick Kangana Ranaut, Bollywood finally discovered an actress who was capable of delivering Rs 100-crore hits without the prop of any male superstar by her side.

A long, troubled gestation period has birthed many a classic movie. Will Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi join the ranks? The director got busy; a top actor then left in a buzz; now, the producer apparently has got himself sacked. Why, feisty Kangana, queen of the title, has just to flash her bejewelled sword!

The sky is a contrast of breezy azure and an angry, roiling mass; as hills roll in the background, a giant statue of Lord Shiva raises its granite head. In the foreground washed by light rain, saree wrapped tightly around her, stands Kangana Ranaut. She says time stood still in Coimbatore that day.

Candid delight from Kangana Ranaut as she enjoys some shopping time in London. She’s there shooting for a picture in which she will be starring opposite Rajkummar Rao. It’s called Mental Hai Kya—a bit harsh, perhaps, if it’s asking about Brexit.

The rookie, Kangana, tries harder in this metallic, beaded jumpsuit, redolent partly of Saturday Night Live and partly of Jane Fonda’s Barbarella.

Playing one of the great heroines of Indian history is no easy task, and Kangana has a sword cut on her forehead to show for it. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is being shot at Amber fort and, as can be seen, the petite actress, turbaned, armed and bejewelled, has put on an expression of noble calm. No joke this, having the mien of a queen!

We thought the sordid episode featuring Hrithik and Kangana, with competing accusations of explicit overtures and chauvinist harrassment, had been quietly buried. But no, Kangana’s sister has fired a new broadside, opening the suppurating wounds. Bollywood is ugly, some say. Even feathery sequins can’t hide the horror.

Choli, jacket or skirt, Manish Malhotra keeps it colourfully electric, and Kangana carries it off with nonchalance at a fashion show in Mumbai. At Rs 15 crore a film, the showstopper is arguably Bollywood’s highest paid actress, but snapped at reporters when asked if it was true.

Liked What They Saw This is about another time cheek-by-jowl with this one; about our time putting its best-shod foot forward. At a Mumbai film festival Adoor Gopalakrishnan, M.S. Sathyu and Kokilaben Ambani flanked a splendidly gowned Kangana Ranaut riding a crest of well-being, acclaim and wealth. That, and the collared, shimmering sweep, merited close inspection.

Queen (2014) Rani’s “honeymoon with self” in Paris and Amsterdam after getting betrayed by her possessive, chauvinist fiancée, pressed just the right emotional buttons to make her the queen of audience hearts. Also fetched her the national award and the Filmfare one for best actress.

Krrish 3 (2013) Toast of the film and its only takeaway, Kangana plays Kaya, the form-changing, mutant female accompanist of the evil antagonist Kaal, created by fusing the serum of a woman and a chameleon.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010) Is Bollywood actress Rehana whom the Haji Mastan-like gangster Sultan Mirza (Ajay Devgan) lusts after

Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009) As supermodel Nandita, possessed by an unknown force, Kangana plays yet another unhinged character and begins her search for the “normal”

Fashion (2008) Won both the national as well as Filmfare award for best supporting actress. Kangana plays eccentric supermodel Shonali Gujral who is ruined by drug abuse. Said to be inspired by the case of Geetanjali Nagpal, a former model found begging on Delhi streets

Life In A Metro (2007) Kangana is the go-getter Neha who has no qualms about sleeping with her boss to get ahead in her career

Woh Lamhe (2007) Played with aplomb a Parveen Babi-like neurotic, schizophrenic actress called Sana Azim

Gangster (2006) Bagged the best debut award for her role as alcoholic bargirl Simran who is in love with both a gangster and a restaurant singer

Misconception It’s hard to see the rationale behind this ‘concept gown’ by Gavin Miguel. Kangna Ranaut ought to have left it exactly where she found it... the foot of the paper shredder. But hey, that’s just us. Looking more ragdoll than showstopper at this Blender’s Pride gala, Kang appears to concur.

B’wood’s delicate darling, fresh from her Once Upon a Time in Mumbai success, is ready for her Knock Out break. And then, a string of releases await—Tanu Weds Manu, No Problem, Game and Rascals.
