The height and build are fine, so is the cricketing gear. The iconic posture of the ‘Natraj’ shot and the toothy grimace is spot on, too. But, if this is Tunbridge Wells, and if Ranveer aka Kapil is out playing his 175 n.o. against Zimbabwe, those smudgy pink blobs on the boundary in the background that mystified a whole generation of schoolboys are missing. Ah, but that’s just a quibble—we wish Kabir Khan’s 83 well. P.S.: Can Ranveer copy Kapil’s bowling action as well? If yes, draft him in!

In this still from upcoming biopic '83, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh plays former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev's “Natraja shot”, which has trended on social media after the 34-year-old actor shared it. Directed by Kabir Khan, the film will chronicle India's win under Kapil's captainship, when the team defeated West Indies in the final to clinch their first-ever World Cup trophy in 1983.

His penchant for prancing about in outrageous clothes —the incessant, kitschy peacocking—might irritate you, but the one role tailormade for Ranveer Sinh’s exuberance was Gully Boy. Inspired by street rappers Divine and Naezy, Ranveer, his rapper team and Alia set Dharavi alight with their defiant poetry. Acclaimed by all, it is now India’s official entry to the Oscars. We need them to break the fourth wall now.

What holds true for advertisers goes for Bollywood’s publicity seekers too—namely, with over a billion eyeballs trained at the India vs Pakistan, there couldn’t be a bigger platform. Saif Ali Khan chaperoned his young co-star, debutante Alaia Furniturewalla at Old Trafford, while the atrociously dressed Ranveer, used his welder’s glasses to forge selfies with cricketers former and current.

It’s a sort of constructed coincidence—fixing the shooting for a film on the 1983 World Cup triumph (in England, naturally) at the time of the 2019 tournament! Ranvir Singh (Kapil!) and his assorted ‘Devils’ also arrived at the Mumbai airport in a ‘team’ bus. Look at them exulting. That’s a singular piece of bad acting, blokes. In 1983, we didn’t do clenched fists to this extent.

A flashy, impulsive guy he often seems, wearing outrageous clothes and grinning at the camera as if he cannot ever give offence. But here’s another Ranveer Singh, sombre in a quiet bandhgala, reconciled to his husbandly duties as retainer, carrying wife Deepika’s silver sandals at her cousin’s wedding. As if they know his mood, they’re leaving him pretty much alone too!

Whether the world premiere of Gully Boy at the Berlin Film Festival reiterates Bollywood’s hold more than it indicates the Berlinale’s decline is another matter, but the irrepressible Ranveer was in character as his goofy rapper: shockingly meretricious tuxedo, blown-up hair, machine-gunning away to everyone’s delight. Beside him Alia was a soothing balancing act, her silkily trailing train a rival to that of a British princess on her wedding day.

Only gali boys with millionaire benefactors can afford to dress so tastelessly in expensive jackets and sportswear. But when has Bollywood let verisimilitude stand in its strident ways? Thus, Ranveer at the trailer launch of Gully Boy, about a rapper’s breakthrough, with co-star Alia, who does better.

Right. A caricatured, age-old trope from Bollywood: The figure of the garishly done up ‘rowdy Romeo’ (those animalistic jackets, that high heel, the wolf whistle) wooing the shyly wanton trollop, finger on chin, hips commencing to swing away to a rising shriek of music. Ranveer and Sara Ali Khan are only play-acting for a promo for Simmba, but if this depresses you, close your eyes and think of Grace Kelly.

Italy, all of a sudden, has overtaken Provence, Switzerland and grand European chateaus as the destination for celebrity Indian weddings. Preparations were afoot at the Villa del Balbianello on the impossibly picturesque Lake Como for the nuptials of Deepika and Ranveer, a duo who looks no less handsome than the fancy environs of their grand day on November 14 and 15. We hope Como lives up to their dreams.

Are they a perfect match? Let’s hope they are, for finally Deepika-Ranveer have announced their grand wedding, on Novemeber 14-15, far from India, as if to get away with their chosen invitees from the likes of you and me. We just hope the affair in Lake Como won’t be too filmy...our lavender design flourishes (see these corners) would then be in vain.

And the winner of the best piece of designer clothes fashioned out of drapery is Anaita Shroff Adajania, who has somehow convinced Ranveer and Portuguese Sara Sampaio to don her stuff. Justified joking apart, Sara doesn’t just look like Adriana Lima, she’s a Victoria’s Secret model too.

Do you think Kapil and Ranveer share even a passing resemblance? So why then is the actor looking so happy to be playing our legend in Kabir Khan’s ’83—a film of that magical World Cup memory. Measure Kapil’s guarded grin, and add your own apprehensions to it.

If Pooja (above) has been swinging and bending, Ranveer Singh, who now has an acting reputation to keep up to, has been sedulously pumping iron. This, prepping for his cop’s role in Simmba, with Sara Ali Khan being the recipent of his muscular charm.

Now that his over-the-top histrionics in Padmaavat has gone down well, Ranveer’s star is rising as high as a Diwali rocket would go. In monetary terms, that is—the actor is reportedly being offered Rs 15 crore for a five-minute performance at the opening gig at the IPL. This limbs-splayed routine jump on a neon-lit stage is at least 45 years old. Maybe Ranveer will change into something more casual.

Ranveer is a likeable chap (so they say) and Deepika is a golden girl; both are loath to admit nothing beyond ‘comfort’ in each other’s company. But gossip is audacious, and after ‘confirming’ their courtship and then, recently, their engagement, tales are being spun (or told, if you’re so inclined) on a holiday with Ranveer’s family in Sri Lanka and expensive gifts for Deepika!

Three In An Over At first glance, it might look like famous people on the deck of a ship before a voyage. It is, actually, the Eden Gardens. The occasion: the IPL final. The stars: Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and Ranveer Singh. The clickers: Calcuttans who cared a fig for the match.

For Thumping Fun Zoya Akhtar—who's grabbing Ranveer Singh, who is flanked by the gorgeous Priyanka, who is hugged by another—thought up a brunch as a promotion for their film Dil Dhadakne Do. It was to be about ‘love, eating and dancing' but an impromptu Ranveer-Anil Kapoor dance to My name is Lakhan was the highlight. Caught the elegant dame in white in the background—hair brushed up, all earrings and shade? Yes, the lassie of the moment, Anushka, is in this one too!

Put On Your Prancing Shoes What lies behind that easy grin of Parineeti? What lies under Ranveer Singh's painful cowboyhood? Remember the tasteless joke, belittling harassment, she pulled at Big Boss house? And to think that all this playing at Indians-cowboys was for promoting a tiredly named film called Kill Dil. Would turn out to be bosh anyway.
