How is Lamhaa different from other films on Kashmir?

The story and the way it’s told. Facts like Kashmiris calling Indians Hindustanis, their hatred for the Indian army and the claim for azadi have remained unstated in other films.

Why a film on Kashmir?

It was an interaction with some students, where one of them called Kashmir a ‘beautiful prison’, that intrigued me to explore this issue.

What kind of research went into the film?

I met separatists, militants, common people, jawans and higher officials, those who’ve suffered offences by armed forces.... It was all about putting their stories together.

How was it shooting in the Valley?

Incredible! At every stage, it was a guerrilla shooting. It was the warmth and hospitality of the locals that pulled the production through.

How was the cast chosen?

Sanjay Dutt’s image, his personality and sensitivity towards the issue made him an easy choice for the M.I. officer’s role. And Bipasha, the only actress who agreed to shoot in the Valley, aptly portrayed her fiery character.

How did the censor board react to the film?

I was asked to use ‘agency’ instead of RAW.

Why a long gap after Parzania?

The research took me two years and then the screenplay took some time.

You invite personal stories for your films.

There is no better story than a true story, which is more so for human interest themes.

How has the transition from documentaries to features been?

It’s a little easier making docus because you don’t have to raise much funds and it depends on various factors.

Do you see a solution to Kashmir?

An environment of trust needs to be created. I wish the armed forces were removed so people have some space to breathe. The whole question of identity, the feeling of being wanted and appreciated needs to be brought back.
