  • Mohammed Siraj made a comeback to the ODI side

  • Shreyas Iyer selected, subject to fitness clearance from Centre of Excellence

  • Hardik Pandya not cleared by COE, Jasprit Bumrah rested

The Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee on Saturday (January 3, 2026) named the 15-member India squad for the upcoming three-match one-day international series against New Zealand, starting in Vadodara on January 11. Senior statesmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, only playing the ODI format now, are again the star attractions for the games.

Seamer Mohammed Siraj made a comeback to the ODI side, while Shreyas Iyer was named vice-captain, though included subject to fitness clearance. Iyer, who was hospitalised during the ODI series in Australia in November for spleen laceration, will need to prove his match fitness in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match on January 6 to get clearance from the Centre of Excellence (COE).

Siraj, who was left out for the home series against South Africa, returns to the ODI setup. Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah though was rested, as was being reported, with an eye on the T20 World Cup starting in February.

Senior all-rounder Hardik Pandya was also not included in the team, as he was not cleared by the COE to bowl 10 overs in a match. "Hardik Pandya has not been cleared by the BCCI COE to bowl 10 overs in a match, and considering the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to follow, his workload is being managed," a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India read.

Meanwhile, after being dropped from the T20 World Cup squad, Shubman Gill will take back the ODI leadership mantle from KL Rahul, who led the team in the former's absence. Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant has also retained his place as the second wicket-keeper in the squad.

Tilak Varma and Dhruv Jurel, who were part of the team in the previous series against South Africa, have been left out with senior players returning from injuries. The pace attack consists of Siraj, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh, with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy being the fourth option.
