India suffered its first loss of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, losing to South Africa by five wickets in Perth on Sunday. India won the toss and chose to bat first on a chilly evening in Perth. South Africa’s brutal bowling attack tore Indian top order apart, with Lungi Ngidi nullifying India’s top three – Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. By the end of 9 overs, India had already lost five of their batsmen, with Suryakumar Yadav and Dinesh Karthik on the crease to steady the sinking ship. Yadav started his counter attack and fought against the might of South African bowling as a lone warrior, scoring 68 runs off 40 balls as others around him crumbled. Thanks to Surya’s spirited knock, India reached a half decent score of 133 for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Ngidi picked up four wickets (4/29) and Wayne Parnell sent three batsmen to the dressing room (3/15). In response, South Africa had a shaky start to their run chase with 24 runs for the loss of three wickets at the end of the power play. Aiden Markram (52 of 41 balls) and David Miller (59 runs of 46 balls) put on a 76 run stand and took SA close to victory. Miller hit the winning runs as India’s sloppy fielding cost them the win.
