Upright officers in the state have to literally take to the roads or buckle under to the state’s ruling clique. Ashok Khemka is learning this the hard way. As director, secondary education, he scotched the scores of transfer requests which came to him from the CM’s office. His stand: shifting a teacher mid-session was not only against the transfer policy but also harmed the interests of students. Khemka’s other bids to reform the state’s shoddy education sector also met with CM O.P. Chautala’s disapproval, and he was was promptly shunted out. Now he doesn’t have an office, no car and little work. So Khemka decided to make a point: he’s walking the six km to the secretariat building from his home.
