Afghanistan rode an all-round effort, led by captain Rashid Khan, to defeat United Arab Emirates by 38 runs and earn their first victory in the T20I tri-series (also involving Pakistan) in Sharjah on Monday (September 1, 2025).
The Afghans first posted 188 runs on the board in 20 overs, with Sediqullah Atal (54 off 40 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran (63 off 40) smashing half-centuries. In response, UAE could only muster 150 runs for the loss of eight wickets, which was possible due to captain Muhammad Waseem (67 off 37) and Rahul Chopra's (52 not out off 35) fifties.
For the victors, Rashid (3-21 in four overs) and Player of the Match Sharafuddin Ashraf (3-24 in four overs) claimed three wickets apiece. Rashid became the leading wicket-taker in men's T20Is in the process with his 165th scalp from 98 games. He overtook Tim Southee, who has 164 wickets to his name from 126 matches.
Earlier, UAE won the toss and elected to field first.
