Interestingly, Manmohan’s aides consulted the late prime minister Indira Gandhi’s press advisor H.Y. Sharada Prasad for tips on exactly how much—and when—the prime minister should say to the people. It was Prasad, sources say, who shot down the idea of a press conference—for obvious reasons: in a news conference, a prime minister has less chance to say what’s on his mind than an uninterrupted 15-20 minutes on Doordarshan. His aides say the media will now have to wait until September, on the eve of his departure for the UN general assembly session, for Manmohan’s first press conference.
