Who Did It ’n How
Research organisation Cfore conducted the survey to rank India’s top B-schools. They were segmented into four broad categories—government/public sector-funded autonomous institutes, private, sectoral and university departments. The survey was open to all B-schools in India at www.indiabschools.com where a questionnaire designed for the survey could be downloaded. Invitations were also sent to over 700 institutes—in all, 216 participated. B-schools offering a one-year programme (isb Hyderabad and Great Lakes, Chennai) were not included. The validation exercise was done by a team that cross-checked data against appointment letters, balance-sheets and annual reports. Information veracity was also checked by the ‘mystery shopping’ method.

The objective scores were obtained by evaluating institutes against the following five broad parameters: 1) intellectual capital; 2) placement record; 3) infrastructure and facilities; 4) industry interface; 5) international linkages. These were further divided into subparameters as shown in the table. Marks were allotted against a particular subparameter by normalising against the topper for that parameter. For instance, if median salary was marked at 70 and the highest median salary offered at any institute irrespective of category is Rs 13 lakh per annum, then marks allotted to an institute where median salary offered was Rs 3 lakh per annum would be 3/13*70 = 16.15.

The satisfaction survey of recruiters was conducted online at indiabschools.com. The 713 participants were asked to rate B-school graduates they knew against six parameters—application of knowledge/skills, analytical skills, communication and presentation, creativity, proactive attitude and ability to work in team. A perceptual survey was conducted among faculty who were asked to rate B-schools they were familiar with on a 10-point scale on parameters like intellectual capital, industry interface, infrastructure and placements. The rating they gave to their own institute was not considered. The detailed methodology is available at www.indiabschools.com.
