FIFA World Cup 2022: Portugal Seal Round Of 16 Berth With 2-0 Win Over Uruguay – In Pics

Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal needed a win to secure a spot in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and they did exactly that against Uruguay. A 2-0 win over the South Americans has almost confirmed that Portugal will be topping their group and have already booked a place in the round of 16 with a game to spare. As for Uruguay, the loss has not knocked them out of the world cup but now their fate doesn’t completely rely on themselves. Fernando Santos’ side struggled to create anything worthwhile in the first half while Uruguay’s experienced backline soaked up all the pressure with relative ease. The two time world cup winners weren’t clinical enough which is why the score line remained 0-0 at the break. Portugal sprung life into the game in the 54th minute as Bruno Fernandes curled one inside the box in what appeared to be a cross for Cristiano Ronaldo. The ball beat Sergio Rochet and went into the back of the net. Ronaldo appeared to have got a touch and claimed the goal but in replays it was clear that the goal must be attributed to Fernandes. As Uruguay chased the game, they came close on a couple of occasions but couldn’t find the back of the net. In the 90th minute, Portugal were awarded a penalty after VAR review and Fernandes made no mistake to dispatch the spot kick home to seal the victory.
