Bhupendra Chaubey can stop reading right here. But the transformation of Karenjit Kaur Vohra, from a porn star to a putative author via the backwaters of Bollywood, is worthy of a small salute. Sweet Dreams, her book of short stories with an erotic theme, may be just a savvy marketing gimmick to launch a mobile phone app that will deliver fiction on the go. But wipe out the hype and you will see the guts, gumption, ambition and acceptance of a Punjabi ‘kudi’ an earlier India would have scorned. Without sounding patronising, it is safe to say that the girl who worked at Jiffy Lube has shown more chutzpah in charting her career than her more accomplished compatriots. Sunny, the author, may not win the Booker Prize anytime soon, but she will grab eyeballs—and at least half of India will go to bed peacefully, with the most searched Indian in their pockets. Bharat mata ki jai.
