The few hundred metres between the inside and the outside of the India Art Fair are different time zones. Inside it’s art, outside it is still-life Govindpuri. A fruit juice machine at the shop near the entrance must be sucking in enough germs and PM2 from the river of cars wading by to give it body. Inside it is hard choices between cabarnet sauvignon and chardonnay, between emmental and gruyere. If Chittaprosad were alive, he would be painting the outside. The fair is roomier, prettier and easier to navigate this time. There were many more foreign galleries—from Spain, from Dubai, from Israel—with some stunning works. The treasures in the DAG booth were breathtaking. The artist’s impression of the beemer in the BMW stall was pure kitsch.
There was also a wave of mixed-media and video art which was very popular with the visitors. Business? The buzz is that it was a bit lukewarm but it may be too soon to say as many deals are still being negotiated.
