The fans were treated to the first penalty shootout of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as 120 minutes of football weren’t enough to separate Japan and Croatia. The Asian side were the first to score, scoring in the 43rd minute. Daizen Maeda gave Japan the lead as the Japanese played a short corner and Doan crossed the ball. Maya Yoshida won the header and Maeda’s quick reflexes saw him out the ball in the net. In the second half, Croatia fought back and got the equalizer in the 55th minute through Ivan Perisic. Centre back Dejan Lovren crossed the ball in the box, finding Perisic who headed the ball into bottom right corner. After both the sides got one goal each, neither were able to penetrate freely in the opposition box. There were chances at both the ends in the extra time but neither side were able to make the most of it. In the penalty shootout, Dominik Livakovic was the hero, saving three Japan penalties. Takumi Minamino, Maya Yoshida and Kaoru Mitoma missed their penalties and the final score line was 3-1 in favour of Croatia.
