Biting Cold Days In North India But It's A Warmer Jan This Time; Delhi's Maximum Temp 7 Degrees Below Normal

Delhi-NCR and other parts of North India are experiencing unusually cold daytime weather, which is likely to continue till January 6, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The maximum temperature in Delhi on Thursday was a whopping seven degrees below normal and settled at 12.5 degrees Celsius, bringing piercing cold conditions for residents. Despite the cold day conditions that feel harsh, IMD has said January this year is relatively warmer.

Delhi today morning logged minimum temperature at 9.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees above season's average, while the maximum is expected to settle at around 13 degrees Celsius.

The IMD said that "Cold Day to Severe Cold Day" conditions are very likely to continue in some parts over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi till January 6 and in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan till January 5.

Maximum Temperature 7 Degrees Below Normal in Delhi: Reeling under severe cold conditions, Delhi on Thursday logged maximum temperature of 12.5 degrees Celsius, which is seven degrees below the season's average.

With cold conditions predicted for the coming days, the weather office has forecast that the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 13 and 6 degrees Celsius on Friday respectively.

The minimum temperature in Delhi today morning was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees above season's average, while the maximum is expected to settle at around 13 degrees Celsius.

While the maximum temperature in Delhi and other parts of North India remains below the season's average, the minimum temperature has been above average.

Fog and Train Delays: Parts of North India have also been witnessing foggy conditions over the last several days, hitting flight and train services. Indian Railways on Friday said 22 trains to Delhi from various parts of the country are running late due to various reasons including fog conditions in the northern region.

On Thursday, 26 trains were delayed. 

Biting Cold in Punjab and Haryana: Parts of Punjab and Haryana also reeled under a biting chill on Thursday as the mercury dipped below 6 degrees Celsius at several places. Hisar was the coldest in Haryana with a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, according to IMD weather bulletin. 

The lowest minimum temperature in Punjab was recorded in Amritsar at 4.2 degrees Celsius, the bulletin said. Intense cold also swept Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, which recorded a low of 5.7 degrees Celsius, IMD added. Fog in the morning at most places in both states reduced visibility levels.
