Planning Commission estimates say unemployment rates have gone up drastically in the last two years. It now stands at 9.11 per cent, and can only go up with jobs shrinking in the organised sector, both in the private and public domain. The Commission’s study also indicates that while a few sectors like IT and services industry has seen employment generation, the overall picture is not too encouraging. Agricultural GDP has gone down across the country although the economy has shown growth. The report also points out that the opening up of the economy benefited only a few richer states while those at the bottom rung actually saw economic regression.
