What is Masala Bhangra?

What got you interested in fitness?
My father died of a massive cardiac arrest at 47. He and I would go walking all the time. I am not saying if you work out you will live to be 100—but you will certainly live a longer life.

What made you fuse bhangra and aerobics?
In 1999, I realised you have cardio salsa, African American dance, belly-dancing, but no Indian dance workout.

Were you surprised by the response?
Indians have the lowest rate of physical activity. Now they are recognising the importance of fitness. You should exercise at least 3-4 times a week.

How did the Indian community react?
When I started five years ago, Indians tried to poke fun. Now they are proud of me because I’ve got the desi culture out there.

Has Masala Bhangra caught on among New York celebrities?
I do have big names dropping in on my classes.

You have your own TV show.
I have a Masala Bhangra workout on Fit TV. And I just launched my fifth bhangra workout—Masala Bhangra Workout for Kids.

How often do you work out?
I teach 17 classes a week in Manhattan. I also do Bikram Yoga about 2-3 times a week.

What’s your favourite workout song?
I love anything that makes me move. I love Latin music. Oh, there are so many.

Would you consider moving to India?
It’s the right time to move to India. I live in Manhattan but I wouldn’t mind moving to Bombay.
