Haryana DGP Nirmal Singh has become a disciplinarian of sorts for his force, long used to corrupt ways under the Chautala regime. He has taken to visiting police stations incognito to catch lazy or corrupt officials red-handed. The latest such episode was at a police station in Ambala cantonment where the DGP went disguised as a Rajasthani farmer. He caught the SHO with a bribe of Rs 20,000 which he accepted from the DGP-in-mufti and a complainant who wanted a fraud case registered against some people. The complainant had earlier met the DGP and told him that the SHO, Baljit Singh, had asked for a bribe of Rs 35,000 to register the case about a land deal. These days, Nirmal Singh has been calling on other police stations without warning and has caught several more such cops.
