Kerala has decided to conserve and protect its water resources on a war footing, in the wake of the severe water crisis that the state is currently suffering. According to the Congress government in this once-water-rich coastal paradise, the numerous inter-state water-sharing agreements signed in recent years have worked against the state’s interests. He claims Kerala was giving away its water on the premise that it had surplus water. But these estimates were no longer applicable since many ‘round-the-year’ sources of water were drying up. The government is also likely to bring in laws to ensure there is a check on the commercial exploitation of ground water—following the Coca-Cola row.
