In 1995,I was making my first film Sarfarosh. In Jan 1995, I shot my first schedule of Sarfarosh. Imust share this with you. I had gone to Delhi onDecember 26th 2004 and it was cloudy weather and thesun just wouldn't come out. On the 2nd of JanuaryAamir Khan and the rest of the crew came to Delhi andI was fearful because it was totally cloudy and foggy. On 3rd Jan we reached the location and the cloudsparted and the sun came out. We shot for the film tillthe 12th of Jan in a ten day schedule and the unitleft on the 12th evening. It rained on the 13th and14th. I have a cutting of that because the filmfestival had started then. So my ten days passedwithout any mishap and I realized then that you canattempt to make a film but you need somebody there whowill let you. And now ten years hence I am making mynext film. This is not titled yet.

I have no huge idea in mind that this is what Ishould make but as soon as a n idea occurs to me I workon it. But really what fascinated me in films was themusical-- films like Sound of Music and even Born Freeand Fiddler on the Roof -- and the entire scale of production that was admirable. I'd love to make amusical. I used to think, watching these films, "Wow, whata way to tell a story".

I didn't read as much in schoolso films fascinated me but I started reading when I came to college and then I realized the worth of thewritten word and the weight of books. I actuallystopped seeing films from 1979 to 1990. I'd seeselective films only like Sholay, Shaan or Garm Hawaor Basu Chatterjis's films. So I'd see the awardwinning films etc, but generally I stopped seeing filmswhile earlier I used to see 7 films a week in theatreslike Neptune, Nandi, Bandra talkies, New Talkies etc

The film I am making now has about eight songs but thatisn't what I mean by a musical. I want to explore the possibilityof a true musical . Hobbies? My hobbies are reading, listening to music and I have acollection of all the music of the 50s and 60s--the Hindi film music, all the music composers of thattime. I love English music: the Beatles, country music -- I've a collection of that too,as well as Jazz, Americancountry music.

In 1995, I was making music videos. My Made in Indiahad come that year, and it was a hit, it became verypopular. I had started in 1991 but 1995 was the firstpeak in my career. It was a special year becausebecause my wife was pregnant and we were lookingforward to the child. My son was born on the 6th of Jan 1996. It was a big year for the pop scene in India.

I'd love to make a science fiction story. I have thecomplete thing in my mind and I have narrated it to Hrithik. He loved it but feels that our audiences arenot ready for it yet. It's too early to make it andwould be too much of a risk. It's something I reallywant to do.

But there are other things I'd love to do--a book ofKhushwant Singh called Delhi which I'd love to makeinto a film someday.

Hobby?Flying. That's my passion. I have logged about 8 hoursand I make films so that I can have enough money tobuy myself a small aircraft someday--a two or four seater. I don't get enough chance to fly butthat'swhat I want to do someday.

In 1995 I was making Coolie No. 1. The film became abig hit and very popular. It was a good year. My hobby? When I am alone then I know how seriously I am workingon a film.Nobody knows what goes into making comediesand the real self is confronted only when one is alone--that is the time one introspects and lookswithin oneself and faces oneself. That is myoccupation behind closed doors. The films I'd like to make? Hmmm. Gone with the Wind, It's a Beautiful World.

In 1995, when Outlook started, I was writing Tamannafor Pooja Bhatt - and co-writing Zakhm and writing Dushman,my first directorial venture. I had just quit TV -- I had been directing ZameenAasmaan -- and turned myattention to films.

Now, in 2005, I am doing the post production of my Englishfilm, Hope and a Little Sugar and am working on the pre production of mynext film Runway.

The film I'd like to make? In India, Mother Indiais what I'd aspire to, but I have so many dream projects -- too many. I'd like to make a huge film inevery genre -- a spy thriller, a lovely romance, a fantasy. I haven't even reached the halfway mark yet. Afilm like Amadeus is a dream project for me..

1995 was an important year for me. I was at thecrossroads of my career. I had had three flops and washeading for the fourth. I realised in 1995 that when Itook up a film, it had to be a subject I liked, one thatexcited me and one I was passionate about. Film makingcouldn't be a mechanical exercise. That year I made Fareb--an erotic thriller and things looked up for me..

Film I'd like to make? Something like Amadeus or Raiders ofthe Lost Ark. Something with passion, jealousy betrayal, magnificence.

In 1995, I was making Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. What I'd love to make is what I am thinking of makingnow -- an English film about a character I like verymuch. It's a fascinating character and the film willrevolve around this character. I am going ahead withit.
