Greener Pastures

The natural splendour of Assam does not end with its forests and tea gardens alone. This state has a plethora of Mother Nature’s abundant boons. The fragrance of its environment creates an unmistakable vigour in all travellers who are rejuvinated every time with unquenchable longing, whenever they make their dedicated visits here. This state is a blessing to the nature lovers.

Haflong and Jatinga Valley

Haflong is generally considered to be the only hill station of Assam and this quiet and quaint town is an ideal place for a relaxing back-packing weekend. The Haflong Lake soothes the soul of any traveller with its gentle floating wind or the boat rides for families nestled in the tranquil bosom of its waters. Also, the view of the sunrise in the Borail Mountain from its Circuit House and the holy Kali Mandir atop a hill are all must-visit places. But the ‘cherry on the cake’ of this place is the half- an- hour drive to the mystical valley of Jatinga. This valley has made news due to its so called mysterious bird suicides. However, other than this phenomenon, the valley is breathtakingly beautiful and can be reached from either Haflong or from Silchar, which has a direct flight to both Guwahati and Kolkata.

Panimoor Waterfall

This is another beautiful spot in the state of Assam and is located in the same district of Dima Hasao where both Haflong and Jatinga are located . This waterfall has been created by the Kapili River and its gushing white stream of falling water is like a poet’s soothing verses of unabashed beauty.  

Barak Valley

The beautiful Barak Valley is situated in the south of Assam. It is created by the gushing effervescent Barak River and is also named after it. Barak has a very rich aquatic biodiversity and, when it reaches further  down to Bangladesh, it breaks into two-Kushiara and Surama. The entire Barak Valley is lush green with numerous tea gardens, hills, waterfalls and forests. One of the famous trekking routes in this valley is the hike to the top of the Bhuvan Pahar where there is a famous shrine of Lord Shiva.

Apart from the above places, the state is also home to the largest river island and the smallest inhabited river island in the World—Majuli and Umananda, respectively.

A bird watcher’s paradise and listed in the famous Guinness Book of World Records, Majuli has become the most famous tourist destination of Assam in current times. The name in the local language means a landmass   between two   streams of a river . Majuli is home to a variety of flora and fauna. It is also a cultural centre with numerous Satras.   Umananda, on the other hand, is the smallest inhabited river island in the world and situated in Guwahati on the Brahmaputra River. It was known as Peacock Island during the British era, and the island has a famous eponymous Lord Shiva Temple on top of a hill there.

Deepor Beel, Guwahati

Deepor Beel is a freshwater lake situated near Guwahati and one of the largest in the region. This lake is important for its biodiversity and has been declared a bird sanctuary and a Ramsar Site considering its environmental and biological importance.
