The partnership between Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama has swelled to dangerous proportions now, from an Indian perspective. The SL skipper, in particular, is timing the ball sweetly and the stand is past the 50-run mark. As long as Athapaththu stays in the middle, India will not breathe easy.

A small recovery is building, though India will be eager to break this stand quickly.

The equation now stands at 101 needed from 78 balls.

Double strike from Sneh Rana and this looks all but over for Sri Lanka.

First, Nilakshika Silva paddles one onto her stumps, then Sugandika Kumari has her poles rattled trying a wild heave.

Rana has been excellent, finishing with 2 for 32 in her 10 overs at a superb economy of 3.2.

The hosts now need 83 off 54 with just two wickets in hand.

India sensing a big opening-day win.

A comfortable win for India in the end. Early on, it looked tricky when Athapaththu was going strong alongside Samarawickrama, but Deepti Sharma turned the tide.

Having already contributed with the bat, she struck with the ball to remove the Sri Lankan skipper and shift momentum India’s way.

Despite a few cameos down the order, Sri Lanka never managed a sustained challenge and eventually fell short by 59 runs.

"It was a turning point. Because back-to-back wickets were falling. Wanted to have a long partnership (and bat till the 47-48th over). The things that we had planned, we executed it. No pressure at all because I am used to these types of innings and situations. Have played it in the past, and that partnership with Amanjot was important. I do not feel pressure, I enjoy my batting. On this type of pitch, I believe in my stock balls, and try to bowl stump to stump, while backing my strengths. First match always sets the tone and there are a lot of positives from the match, and hopefully in the rest of the tournament, we can keep performing this way and keep winning this way."
