- Basu ensured that the CM didn't get a free hand in choosing his ministers
- The anti-Buddhadeb faction in the CPI(M) enjoys Basu's support
- Dalmiya is close to Basu and has his backing
- Dalmiya was an easy target for the CM to take on Basu
- Buddhadeb has a history of differences with Basu. He walked out of the latter's ministry in 1992 calling it a "cabinet of thieves."
