After violent protests near his residence in a Colombo suburb, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a national emergency. Dozens of protesters were arrested after they clashed with security personnel and burnt government vehicles.Sri Lanka is going through its worst financial crisis. The country faces an acute shortage of foreign exchange that has led to increase in prices and shortage of vehicular fuel, cooking gas, food, and thermal fuel for electricity production. The country is facing up to 13 hours of power cuts a day.
