Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other in any competitive tournaments. Tonight's match will be the first encounter between the two sides.

The first swipe at Flekken's goal, and it comes from a corner by Savinho that the away side fail to deal with. Ake and Bobb keep the ball alive, with the former having a shot that goal that brings out a reaction save from Flekken. Early warnings for Leverkusen.

The first shot of the night for Leverkusen, and it comes from Poku. The Dutch forward found himself in the box and at the end of a cross from Maza. He had a first-time attempt at goal, but it was blocked by Ait-Nouri before it could trouble Trafford.

Out of nowhere, Bayer Leverkusen take then lead from one swift movement, with Alejandro Grimaldo getting his name on the scoresheet.

A ball from the right flank by Maza was headed down by Kofane, who played it back to Garnacho. The full-back had a first-time shot with his left foot that flew past Trafford and into the back of the net.

It has been a very positive response from City since going down. Ait-Nouri had a decent chance when Bade's headed clearance fell in his path, but his half-volley flew well wide of the post.

City continue to push forward, and a cross from the edge of the box by Nico almost found the foot of Marmoush but was inches too ahead.

Just a few seconds of added time, and the referee blows his whistle to signal half time. Man City almost levelled the scores before the break through Reijnders, but his powerful effort brought out an excellent save from Flekken. A big second half awaits the home side.

The referee blows his whistle to get the second half underway. City, who were improving during the closing stages of the first half, make a triple change. Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, and Matheus Nunes come on for the Sky Blues, replacin Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb, and Rayan Ait Nouri.

The first shot on target of the second half, and it comes from O'Reilly. Leverkusen fail to clear the danger on the right flank from Savinho, and City recycle the ball through Foden, who lays it off for O'Reilly. Schick scores!! Bayer Leverkusen double their advantage right at the start of the second half. It was another fluent piece of football, with Maza floating in an inch-perfect ball into the box. Schick outjumped Ake and got at the end of it to head the ball into the back of the net.

Stones found a bit of space and rolled it towards Foden. The substitute showed an excellent first touch to receive it in the box before having a shot towards the near post, but it was a strong block from the defence.

Meanwhile, Haaland and Cherki are warming up on the touchlines, so expect them to come on soon.

Doku tried to make his way into the Leverkusen box past Poku, but the Dutchman won that battle. Meanwhile, City make the change the fans were waiting for, with Haaland replacing Marmoush. Cherki replaces defender Khusanov.

The chances continue to fall for City, but as has been the case all night, the final effort has been really disappointing. Haaland does extremely well to make his way into the box, but his final shot is too central to Flekken, who makes a comfortable save.

At the other end, Leverkusen break in numbers. Maza had a lot of time to shift it to his right, but his shot is blocked by the incoming Reijnders.

City keep on their pressure on the Leverkusen box, hoping to make a grandstand end to this match. Moments after Ake's header from inside the box was saved by Flekken, Cherki made a dart into the penatly area, but his shot was blocked by the defence and cleared away.

With City's pressing intensifying, Hjulmand decides to inject some fresh legs by bringing on Nathan Tella to replace Kofane. The Cameroonian has absolutely run himself ragged tonight and will get some rest before their next match against Borussia Dortmund.

City have pushed hard and hard, with Cherki bringing out a couple of good saves from Flekken. They have nothing to show for it, though, as Leverkusen have held on to their two-goal lead.

Just two more minutes of added time, as shown by the fourth official, for the German side to see off to earn three crucial points.

The referee blows his whistle to bring the match to an end, and Guardiola's 100th Champions League game in charge of Man City ends in a crushing defeat. It's a well-deserved result, too, with the visitors holding off the danger from the City forward line effectively and securing three crucial points.
