Joga Ram’s Family, Kali Beri Camp, Jodhpur In 2005, when the UPA government reduced the mandatory stay in India to be eligible for citizenship from seven to five years, Joga Ram, 80, and six members of his family were among those in the camp who failed to get citizenship. They fell short by 21 days. Now, they have been living in Jodhpur for over 15 years, and it is 10 years since they applied for citizenship. “I don’t know how much longer I will have to wait,” he says woefully. “We have to spend every day in fear of the police, without any freedom to move from here.” Joga Ram carries an old deed for land in a Jaisalmer village and bearing the name of his grandfather. “We have land and family here. After spending all we had to get a visa, we are being treated as enemies,” he says. He recalls that for many years, his relatives would cross the border frequently, in search of work or to meet relatives. “Once fences were raised, crossing became difficult and we were alienated from relatives in India. We were made Pakistanis by the government there, but we were never fully accepted. But now that we are here, in India, we don’t have any ID papers. So we can’t even buy a SIM card to talk to relatives in this country.”

Ten-Year Gap Manmohan Singh’s inability to visit Nagaland “even once in 10 years” has prompted three-time state CM, Neiphieu Rio, leader of the Naga People’s Front, to jump into the fray for the state’s lone Lok Sabha seat. Rio is bitter over the perceived snub by the outgoing PM. Accusing the UPA regime of not implementing the special package for the state (announced by the NDA government) and diverting funds meant for developing highways, the CM has declared that his presence in Delhi and in Parliament is necessary to further the state’s interests. He, of course, plans to support the NDA.

The Ruling Classes It’s well-known that nowadays Rahul Gandhi choreographs UPA-II’s policy moves, whether it be the decision to increase the annual LPG cylinders cap or the announcement of the seventh Pay Commission for state employees. Another feather added to the topi last week was the two additional attempts in UPSC exams for general candidates (up from the current four), and the increased upper age limit (now 32). This came about after student hopefuls, despondent after weeks of acrimonious protests and meetings with several politicians, met Rahul Gandhi in a last-ditch effort. Interestingly enough, some of the students there were sent by the director of a coaching centre in Delhi who’s himself a strong BJP supporter. Apparently, he felt their only hope of getting things done in the UPA is to “get a thappa” from RaGa!

On The Telangana Express Senior YSR Congress leader Mysoora Reddy has a theory about why UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi took the decision to grant Telangana. “It’s because she knows that Rahul Gandhi can’t win from Amethi next time. She wants her son to contest from Medak LS seat,” says Mysoora. In 1980, Indira Gandhi won from this seat on an INC party ticket. Mysoora alleges that Sonia’s plans to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh rests wholly on this plan; to get Rahul elected from Medak. Incidentally, the parliamentary seat of Medak falls in Telangana and is currently represented by TRS MP and former dashing actress Vijayashanti who recently defected to the Congress and even had a one-to-one with Mrs G. So the heir apparent could get the berth though Vijayashanti is, in the context of the region, an eye-catching MP. The prospect of Rahul in Medak is compelling although it may be as real as fairytales about frogs and princes.
