  • Great Andamanese: Settled in Strait Island, their numbers fell after ‘contact’ with the Brits in the 1860s. Population: 40-45.
  • Onges: Confined to a 100 sq km reserve in Little Andaman. Population:100.
  • Jarawa: Occupy a reserve in South and Middle Andaman islands. Population: 266.
  • Sentinelese: Have repulsed all outside contact, remain hostile. Live on the North Sentinel island. Population: 200-250.
  • Shompens: Of Mongoloid stock, they live in the forests of Great Nicobar and have resisted moving into Indian habitations. Current numbers: 200-250.
  • Great Nicobarese: They inhabit 12 0f the 22 Nicobar islands and are considered partly assimilated. Most have converted to Christianity. Population: 30,000.
