After McDonald's India's North and East branches announced dropping tomatoes from their menu, Aam Aadmi Party leader and Member of the Rajya Sabha Raghav Chadha took a jibe at the situation as the country sees skyrocketing prices of the vegetable.

Raghav Chadha took to Twitter to speak about the issue and claimed that the central government has turned 'happy meals to sad meals' referring to the fast food chain McDonald's famous item on the menu 'happy meal'.

He tweeted saying, "Even McDonald's can't afford tomatoes anymore. Be it in our homes or restaurants, with inflation spiraling out of control, the government has turned happy meals into sad meals."

Tomato prices in India

On Thursday, the retail prices of tomatoes in Delhi reached Rs 120 per kg while it was Rs 22 per kg in the beginning of this year. The latest retail price of the vegetable was Rs 140 per kg in Chandigarh, reportedly.

It is not just tomatoes but prices of several other vegetables have increased which has led to the rise of vegetable theft. Reportedly unidentified people allegedly stole 20kg of tomatoes, a box of green chillies and 35kg of other vegetables from a shop in Mhabubabad in Telangana.
