An Assam court on Friday awarded death penalty to the prime accused in the gang rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Nagaon district in March earlier this year.

District and Session Judge Rita Kar sentenced Zakir Hussain to death under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for the murder for raping the minor girl.

On March 23, Hussain and the two minors attacked the girl, a student of Class 5, when she was alone at home in Lalung village. After raping her, they set the victim on fire.

The girl was taken to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, where she died the following day.

Apart from the three, five more people were named in the charge sheet, filed in April.

According to reports, a juvenile court had already sent the two minors to a correctional home for three years. Other five accused were acquitted for the lack of evidence.

It's worth noting two days ago, District and Sessions Judge of Shimla pronounced death sentence to three accused – Chander Sharma, Tajender and Vikrant – in the murder and kidnapping of four-year old Yug Gupta who was murdered in 2014.
