A United Nations report, released on 16th June 2025, has alleged that several companies support Israel’s activities in Palestine, which includes Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Titled 'From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide,' the report suggests these businesses contribute to serious human rights issues, including actions that relate to genocide under international law.
The report uses data from civil society, academic sources, and a UN database of businesses involved in Israeli settlements, set up by a 2016 UN Human Rights Council decision.
It lists companies in different industries, with arms makers like Elbit Systems, Israel Aerospace Industries, Lockheed Martin, and Leonardo provide weapons and surveillance tools.
Construction firms like Caterpillar supply equipment alleging that these have been used to destroy Palestinian homes, and HD Hyundai is tied to building settlements whereas tech companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and IBM offer data and surveillance systems. With banks like BlackRock, AXA, BNP Paribas, and Vanguard have invested in these firms, with AXA holding $4.9 billion.
Shipping company Maersk is noted for delivering coal to support Israel’s energy needs, while tourism sites Airbnb and Bookingdotcom list properties in Israeli settlements, with Bookingdotcom offering 70 listings by May 2025.
The report does not make legal judgments but calls for investigations into possible violations of international law, such as apartheid or genocide, based on UN business and human rights guidelines.
It asks companies to stop working in Israel, suggests expanding the UN database, and supports public efforts like boycotts and divestments to hold companies accountable for their roles in human rights issues across Israel, whilst referencing to a 2024 International Court of Justice opinion.
