THE youth in Uttar Pradesh may soon have to abide by the code laid down by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (abvP). In a letter forwarded to Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, they have specified a set of rules, especially for college-going students. They believe that if they succeed, the prescribed 'living style' will change Indian society for the better.

aBVP's rules basically relate to changes in dress code. "Girls should not be seen in mini skirts and tight jeans and no boy should walk around smoking or chewing tobacco in the university," says the letter. They also plan to end the 'dating' spree that is on the rise.

THe CM's decision has boosted their spirit. "We are sure Rajnath ji won't succumb to any pressures to lift this ban," says Ravinder Nath Upadhyaya, abvp CITY organisation secretary. "These contests only provoke men to watch women in obscene forms; soon they'll lose respect even for Indian women." Singh himself sees something fishy behind Indian women's consistent wins. Says he: "Titles are now given to Indian women just because our country is being targeted by multinational companies to serve their business interests."

Says Dayashankar Tripathi, another ABVP leader from Lucknow: "It's a shame Indian women expose themselves to win fame; fame can be achieved in other ways also." That script is awaited.
