The 1.3 km steel arch rail bridge running over the Chenab River, connecting Katra to Banihal, was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Suspended at a staggering height of 359 metres above the riverbed, which is 35 metres higher than Paris' Eiffel Tower, the Chenab River Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district has been hailed as an engineering marvel of its kind and as the world's highest steel arch rail bridge. With the district also housing the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Trikuta hills, there's immense scope for the bridge to augment tourist footfall in the region and discover its other lesser-known attractions as well. Quick Facts About The "World's Highest Rail Bridge":The arch bridge connects Bakkal and Kauri in Jammu and Kashmir, forming a vital link between Katra and Banihal.It stands 1,178 feet above the riverbed, which is 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower.The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project aims to boost connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir by providing connectivity in complex topography and weather conditions. One of the key components of the project is a bridge that has been constructed at a cost of Rs 35000 crore.The Chenab bridge alone costs approximately Rs 14,000 crore.The stability and safety of the world's highest bridge are tested for high-velocity winds, extreme temperatures, earthquakes and hydrological impacts due to water level increase.The bridge is expected to have a lifespan of approximately 120 years. Siyad BabaLocated approximately 40 km from Reasi, this stunning waterfall stands tall at a height of about 5,000 feet and cascades down the hillside for almost 100 feet. The optimal time to visit this waterfall is from August to October, when it is at its most powerful and can be heard thundering down the hillside.Bhim Garh FortBuilt at the bank of River Anji atop a hillock by the Rajput king Bhimdev Rasyal Of Reasi, the fort is a grand historical structure. Nau Devi Mata TempleVisitors from Katra often come to explore this ancient cave temple nestled in a beautiful natural setting. The temple features nine natural rock formations that are believed to represent Goddess Shakti. Visitors must descend a flight of approximately 100 steps to reach the cave temple. However, be cautious of mischievous monkeys in the area.Where To Stay In ReasiIf you are visiting Reasi, booking a stay at one of the many hotels dotting Katra is best, as it only takes approximately 30 mins to reach by road. How To Reach Reasi And When To Go The closest airport is located in Jammu, which is 72 kilometres away by road. The nearest railway station and road transportation hub is in Katra.
