Director cooperative Abbas-Mustan, who specialise in cobbling together foreign DVDs and spicing them up for the Indian palate with song ’n dance numbers and comic tracks, have had a cool run at the box office so far. Race was an interesting ride, filled as it was with moral ambiguities and unapologetically dark, murky and debauched characters. Race 2, however, is so witless, it makes you wonder why it was made in the first place. Much of the elements of prequel stay. The innumerable glam locations, the heists, murders, twists and turns, the action and stunts, the good-looking bodies perennially walking in slo-mo and those sexy cars. Like the original there’s not much to any of the characters and the story either.
It’s all about Saif trying to avenge the murder of his wife with some help from cop Anil Kapoor and his ditzy sidekick Ameesha Patel who talk titillatingly of ‘mangoes’ and ‘cherries’. The person Saif is gunning for is ruthless businessman John Abraham. What’s missing is the masala and fun of Race. Race 2 is much too boring and far from entertaining.
So even though you go into it willing to suspend your disbelief, it doesn’t quite happen. Race 2 just isn’t racy enough. My only takeaway was the song Lat lag gayi.
