Prof. (Dr.) Shishir Sinha, Director General of CIPET:

CIPET, with its ubiquitous presence across India, has been contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in the areas of Petrochemicals, Chemicals, and allied sectors. It supports the industry fraternity in reforming and re-engineering practices to align with market trends under the domains of Academics, Skill Development, Technology Support Services, and Research & Development, all of which synergize with the guiding principles of the “Viksit Bharat” vision articulated by the Government.

CIPET plays a pivotal role in bridging the employment gap in the petrochemicals, chemicals, and allied industries across India by continuously reforming existing practices and adopting relevant approaches to develop a readily employable workforce. We are not just teaching materials science but redefining it. Our curriculum now includes bio-based polymers, recycling technologies, circular design, and waste-to-wealth innovations.

We have also partnered with industries working on biodegradable packaging, eco-composites, and energy-efficient processes — giving students exposure to explore the future rather than merely fitting into the present. Our goal is to create a truly scalable, affordable, and high-performance alternative to single-use plastics — one that does not compromise on quality but rewrites the rules of waste and consumption. We believe that is where science must lead. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure and experienced technocrats, CIPET is poised to emerge as a pioneer in providing alternatives to single-use plastics.

Since its inception, CIPET has consistently stood ahead of many traditional training institutes in the nation by reforming its practices and methodologies to drive national development. Every CIPET centre embodies an amalgamation of Institute and Industry under one roof, unlike conventional training institutes. Anyone who visits a CIPET facility will undoubtedly experience this unique ecosystem.

Plastics, being a miracle material that meets the diversified needs of society in packaging, construction, transportation, electronics, and healthcare, often face outright rejection due to misconceptions and lack of awareness about the difference between single-use and reusable plastics. To address this, CIPET has developed the slogan “NO Plastics to KNOW Plastics,” which combines education, awareness, sustainability initiatives, and scientific advocacy. Through various activities under “Swachhta Abhiyan” and “Swachhta Pakhwada” at all CIPET Centres, it not only counters misconceptions with facts but also builds capacities, drives behaviour change, and fosters innovation for a cleaner, more plastic-responsible society.

CIPET envisions becoming a global hub for sustainable materials innovation. Our mission is to bridge the gap between science, skill, and society — training engineers who do not just build products but solve global challenges with creativity, conscience, and collaboration.
