Rayavadee Krabi | "My dad, my dad!" the visibly shaken girl, no older than 12, cried out as we pulled her onto our boat. Tears streamed down her face, her voice trembling with fear.

We were on our way back from a sea excursion (during which we explored Ko Poda, an island off the west coast of Thailand in Krabi, and Chicken Island, named for its distinctive chicken-head-shaped rock formation), still buzzing with excitement from the kayaking adventure that awaited us next. That's when we spotted them—a father and daughter, clearly in distress. The man was in the water, clinging to a kayak, while the girl, seated atop it, struggled to steer through the choppy sea.
