PM Modi Flags Off Delhi-Meerut RRTS, Cutting Travel Time To 40 Minutes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 13-km section of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) on Jan 5, linking Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi. This new stretch of the Namo Bharat corridor promises faster and more convenient travel, marking a milestone in regional transit development.During the event, PM Modi boarded a Namo Bharat train at Sahibabad station and travelled to New Ashok Nagar, interacting with passengers and children on board. His journey underscored the government’s commitment to advancing high-speed public transport solutions.The newly operational 13-km segment includes a 6-km underground stretch featuring the Anand Vihar station, a key transit hub. Anand Vihar connects with the Delhi Metro's Blue and Pink Lines, an interstate bus terminal (ISBT), and a railway station, offering seamless multimodal transport options.Passenger services for the extended 55-km corridor from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South commenced at 5 PM on January 5, 2025, with trains running every 15 minutes. The journey between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South now takes under 40 minutes, a significant reduction in travel time compared to traditional modes of transport.Fare And ConnectivityThe fare for a one-way journey between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South is INR 150 for standard coaches and INR 225 for premium coaches. Additionally, the minimum fares are set at INR 20 and INR 30 for standard and premium coaches, respectively.The newly launched section is part of the larger 82-km Namo Bharat corridor, connecting Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut. When fully operational, this corridor will include 16 Namo Bharat stations and nine Meerut Metro stations, transforming regional connectivity.Key Features Of The New StretchIntermodal Connectivity: The New Ashok Nagar station links directly to the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro, improving commuter access from Mayur Vihar, Vasundhara, and nearby areas. Sustainability Impact: The project aims to reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads by over one lakh and cut carbon emissions by 2.5 lakh tonnes annually.
