Netflix has unveiled an almost four-minute teaser for the much-anticipated space opera fantasy, Rebel Moon, directed by American director Zack Snyder, known for his successes with groundbreaking films like 300 (2006) and Dawn of the Dead (2004).

Netflix has planned for Rebel Moon to be released in two parts. The first part, titled A Child of Fire, is set to be released on December 22, 2023, for streaming on Netflix. It was also revealed in the trailer that the second part, titled The Scargiver, will be released on April 19, 2024.

The trailer was launched as part of Gamescom Opening Night Live, which took place in Germany.

Rebel Moon is headlined by Sofia Boutella, who plays Kora, an enigmatic warrior who assists in organizing the peaceful citizens of a planet to fight back against an authoritarian regime. The film tells the story of a peaceful colony on the outskirts of the galaxy that is besieged by the Imperium's troops and its dark commander, the dictatorial Regent Belisarius.. The basic premise of the big-budget fantasy flick talks about how Kora assembles a group of warriors who “share a common need for redemption and revenge.”

Rebel Moon’s cast boasts the likes of Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, Doona Bae, Ed Skrein, Jena Malone, Michael Huisman, and Anthony Hopkins, among others.

Netflix had previously released a behind-the-scenes featurette for Zack Snyder's new venture in the Tudum event that happened in June.

Snyder, who helmed Army of the Dead (2021) and Justice League (2021), claimed that Rebel Moon has existed "elementally" for 20 years and that he had always intended to produce a "giant, atmospheric space adventure."

Snyder originally pitched Rebel Moon as a Star Wars feature before Disney acquired Lucasfilm, and the idea was shelved. Snyder later went on to direct titles such as Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) in the DC Universe.

Snyder had previously commented on how he was inspired as a fan of the Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and the Star Wars franchise. He added that he hoped Rebel Moon would become a successful IP, and a universe would be built from it.
