From redefining the way horse racing is perceived in India to integrating philanthropy with sport and culture, Y. Gopi Rao has been at the forefront of creating purposeful change. As the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Race2Win Foundation, his vision goes far beyond the racetrack — fostering equine welfare, empowering communities and celebrating changemakers who are shaping a better tomorrow.

In this conversation, he shares how the Foundation has evolved over the years, the social impact it continues to drive, and what makes this year’s Deccan Derby a landmark celebration of fashion, sport, and compassion.

1. How has this event evolved over the years ?

- What began as a simple gathering of friends coming together to enjoy the Derby and celebrate the thrill of racing has, over the years, transformed into something much larger. Today, the Race2Win Foundation proudly presents the Derby as a premier event that continues to uphold the legacy and excitement of the sport. Beyond just the races, it now serves as a platform to promote equine welfare, nurture young talent, and strengthen the community around this timeless sport.

2. What kind of social impact have you managed to achieve already through your past efforts?

We’ve made significant strides in bringing well-deserved attention to horse racing as a sport in India. By infusing a sense of glamour and community engagement, we’ve helped broaden its appeal and participation. Beyond the track, our efforts have extended to social development — we’ve revitalized the Anganwadi Centre near the Hyderabad Race Club, turning it into an inspiring space for early learning, and plan to expand this initiative to more centres. Additionally, our unique Adopt a Horse program connects donors with rehabilitation centres, ensuring better care, support, and a dignified life for retired and injured horses.

3) What are your expectations from this year ?

Our goal is to elevate horse racing as a recognized and celebrated sport in India, giving it the visibility and recognition it truly deserves. We aim to spark greater public interest and engagement by showcasing the excitement, skill, and heritage associated with the sport. By creating more opportunities for people to experience and participate in horse racing, we hope to cultivate a deeper appreciation for its nuances, while building a stronger, more vibrant community around it. Ultimately, we want to shine a spotlight on horse racing, positioning it not just as a pastime but as a sport that inspires passion, competition, and connection across generations.

4) How is this year’s event different from earlier years

This year’s Deccan Derby stands out as a landmark edition, thanks to our exciting collaboration with renowned designers Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna. Their association brings a fresh wave of glamour, style, and media attention, creating unprecedented visibility for the event. Beyond the races, this partnership elevates the Derby into a grand celebration of fashion, sport, and culture, making Deccan Derby 2025 not just an event to watch, but an experience to be a part of.

5) Why did you choose Malaika as the show stopper ? How did she come orboard?

- Malaika is a true icon, and the perfect choice to headline an event of this stature. She embodies both purpose and grace, and her presence brings a unique charisma that elevates the entire experience. With her involvement, we aim to infuse renewed energy into the Foundation’s initiatives and amplify the impact of our activities.

6. How did the collaboration with RGRK happen?

- Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, renowned for their exquisite and innovative designs, were the perfect choice to curate an evening of high fashion for Race2Win Foundations Deccan Derby 2025. Their vision and style not only elevate the glamour of the event but also help bring the right visibility and spotlight to this prestigious sporting occasion.

7. Do you have plans to take this event to other cities in the near future? If yes then what are your expansion plans?

Absolutely. We plan to expand the initiative to other cities and extend our support to race clubs across the country. Our aim is to bring the right visibility to these clubs, promote horse racing as a sport, and encourage greater public participation and engagement nationwide.
