OT Travel Itinerary: 3 Days In Hampi

Located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Hampi has charmed history enthusiasts and adventurers for decades. The UNESCO World Heritage site is comprised of remnants of the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire, and is renowned for incredible archaeological structures set in the backdrop of a unique landscape. From the acclaimed Lotus Mahal, with influences from Indo-Islamic architecture to the Royal Gaj (elephant stables) and the Virupaksha Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, this historically rich region of Karnataka has a wealth of treasures. You must stay for at least three days to explore the treasures of Hampi in some depth. Here is our day-to-day itinerary for what to do and see.DAY 1Start early morning after a hearty breakfast to see the Vittala Temple with its beautiful stone chariot, a major tourist site in Hampi. The temple was constructed in the 15th century and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple features a vast hall with pillars that create musical sounds when struck. The stone chariot is fashioned from a single slab of granite and features rotating wheels.Next check out the Elephant Stables which were built to house royal elephants and their carers. The stables consist of 11 domed chambers connected by a lengthy passageway. The chambers are vaulted and ornamented with elephant and other animal carvings.The Hazara Rama Temple's main attraction is its collection of impressively carved panels that adorn the walls. These panels eloquently depict numerous incidents from the epic Ramayana. After an intense round of ruin explorations, break for lunch. Have a South Indian thali at the well-known and popular Mango Tree restaurant. Its name derives from its resemblance to a lotus flower, and it is located within the Zenana Enclosure. It is believed that the pavilion served as a meeting place for the emperor and his closest advisors, often referred to as a "council chamber" on early maps of the site dating back to 1799. Read more about it here.The Queen's Bath is a unique bathing building with a huge, rectangular pool featuring multiple stairs that lead to a central platform utilised for performances and ceremonies. The bath features elaborate carvings, and various balconies offer views of the surrounding area.DAY 2Start your second day with a visit to the most well-known site in Hampi, Virupaksha Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva. The temple complex features a towering gopuram over fifty metres tall, which is adorned with elaborate carvings of Hindu deities and mythological creatures. The temple courtyard features a massive statue of Nandi, the bull that is considered Lord Shiva's vehicle. Take in the sunrise at Hemakuta Hill. You can get an incredible view of the Hampi landscape from here. Alternatively, book a coracle ride on Tungabhadra river to Anegundi. Hike up to Anjaneya Hill and check out the views as well as the Monkey Temple. In the evening, visit the Hampi Bazaar, a bustling marketplace, once the city's hub of trade and commerce. The market features shops that sell souvenirs, handicrafts, and traditional apparel. You could also walk the two-kilometre stretch of the Kampa Bhupa's Path, commonly known as the Riverside Trek Path, which begins at the Hampi Bazaar and ends at the famed Vittala Temple.The InformationAccommodationHampi offers several stay options, from simple bed and breakfast joints and homestays to more upscale places. The nearest train station is Hospet (13 km).Best Time To VisitHampi is known for extreme heat during summers when temperatures touch 40 degrees and above. Visit during winter, from October to February, when it is more pleasant.EntryHampi is open to visits on all days.
