One moment, the sky darkens, growling and spattering silver rain, the next, it turns into a thousand shades of blue. I sat at a table by the ocean, peering into a bowl of butter chicken at Saffron, the Indian restaurant at OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI, and realised that I was exactly where I needed to be: far from the noise, surrounded by a dreamy landscape I hadn't realised I was longing for.OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI sits like a jewel in the South Malé Atoll, just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé. I sat outdoors, overlooking the sea. The overwater villas dotted the lapping waves, their twinkling lights soothing my city-frazzled nerves and the sound of waves replaced any need for background music. For someone who rarely eats Indian food when not in India, I surrendered happily to a traditional thali, flavourful butter chicken, melt-in-your-mouth kebabs, and bread fresh from the live tandoor. The imli martini arrived tart and perfect. Helmed by an ex-Oberoi chef, Saffron strikes that fine balance between comfort and sophistication.Another evening led me to Soyi, the pan-Asian restaurant inspired by the street kitchens of China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Chef Jason from China served prawn dumplings, Vietnamese summer rolls, and the most decadent pork belly with egg and prawn fried rice. My glass of bubbly, light, playful, celebratory, felt like it belonged there.
