Each year, a select few among the elite still contest for the crown of English football, but the competition behind them is not as distinct any more. Brighton and Hove Albion and Aston Villa have made upward strides in recent years; Newcastle United are threatening to break down the status quo, boosted by their new ownership; Brentford and West Ham United frequently find means to get a result against the big boys, while no one can discount even the teams lying in the relegation zones anymore.

The picture at the other end, though, remains as clear as ever; the three worst-ranked teams at the end of the 38-game season drop to the Championship, replaced by the three best teams from below.
With competition tight for each place, teams often finish level on points, which, in turn, triggers one of the tie-break scenarios that determines their final position.
