Delhi Weather: Waterlogging And Traffic Snarls Amid Downpour

Monsoon rains finally cooled the temperature in the capital, also reducing the pollution. But they created a gridlock, leaving travellers stranded and waterlogged neighbourhoods struggling to cope.

Delhi continued to witness rain on Thursday morning after the capital was hit by heavy downpour on Wednesday evening, inundating neighbourhoods and causing traffic disruptions across the National Capital Region (NCR).

The spell of rain brought relief from the heat and humidity, and brought down the Air Quality Index to 63, in the 'satisfactory' category, at 9 AM, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

India’s Meteorological Department predicted a generally cloudy sky today, with light to moderate rain at most places, with heavy rainfall at isolated places, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorm, with maximum temperature going up to 33 degrees Celsius.

As for the next few days, the prediction forecasts light to very light rain. For July 10, there is an orange alert in Delhi-NCR, except forGurgaon, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Faridabad.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma took stock of the ground and visited the Minto Bridge underpass, which is infamous for waterlogging, and found it free from any waterlogging.

"We have taken several steps to avoid waterlogging at the Minto Bridge underpass. Every year, we used to see photos of buses submerged at the underpass, but all the pump operators are alert currently and carrying out the de-watering exercise. There is no waterlogging here, even though it has been raining for an hour," Verma said.

For the last four months, the Delhi government has been working on identified waterlogging points. Some have been fixed and at other points, the work is ongoing. This shows that the government is working honestly, Verma added.

Between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Wednesday, the Najafgarh weather station recorded 60 mm of rainfall, followed by Aya Nagar (50.5 mm), Pragati Maidan (37 mm), North Campus (22 mm), Pusa (30 mm), Palam (14.4 mm), IGNOU (11.5 mm), Janakpuri (4 mm), Naraina (6.5 mm) and Lodhi Road (1.5 mm).

Meanwhile, Safdarjung, the primary weather station, recorded just 1.4 mm of rainfall.

According to the New Delhi Municipal Council, only one complaint of waterlogging was received at the Integrated Command and Control Centre, PTI reported. Around 29 complaints of waterlogging were received at the PWD control room in the evening.

While Delhiites woke up to pleasant weather and drizzle on Thursday morning, the visuals from Wednesday show waterlogged streets with commuters stuck on the road, as the rain lashed several parts of Delhi during after-office commute hours.

At least six flights were diverted and scores of flights were delayed at the Delhi airport due to bad weather conditions on Wednesday evening, PTI reported.
