Long ago there was this utterly kooky but rather unsung comedy called Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar starring an odd assortment of actors—Kiran Kumar, Radha Saluja, Asrani, Manju, Paintal and Padma Khanna. It was quite a delectable tale about a distrustful wife whose henpecked husband unwittingly ends up spending an innocent night out with an unknown lady atop a broken down giant wheel. Next day, to avoid confrontation with his angry wife, he cooks up a lie about having been out with an old friend, rather imaginatively calling him Champak Bhumiya. Golmaal Returns is actually a retake of the same situation, only the magnificently original name Champak Bhumiya gets swapped with a commonplaced Anthony Gonsalves and the delightful situational humour of the original makes way for inane jokes and over-the-top, unfunny slapstick.
In Golmaal Returns Ajay is the rather washed-out and sour husband and Kareena his utterly colourless wife whose suspicions are fanned by the saas-bahu TV serials. Which turns out to be an infinitely pat way of sucking up to Ektaa Kapoor. And it’s certainly no coincidence that her brother Tushar (as the daft brother-in-law) reprises his popular "dumb" role of Golmaal Part 1 and literally hogs the show. And why not? It’s certainly his career-defining act which he is going to find hard to upstage. Shreyas Talpade is the rather likable, oversmart Anthony, who looks rather fetching in a scene as the pretty drag queen. Also on the fringes are a hyper Arshad Warsi as a policeman desperate to catch Ajay and Amrita Arora, his totally unrequired girlfriend. A subplot involving a psycho serial killer and some cocaine smuggling makes the plot more complicated, unnecessarily so.
The film sneaks in some elaborately choreographed sequences, takes a dig at recent Hindi films, specially Saawariya. It’s packed with risque double entendres, sexual innuendo and anti-gay jokes. The film also harks back to some priceless gags of Part 1 ("playing Black Black" act). But it leaves us with the promise of yet another sequel in which Tushar may get to talk. Wonder if there will be anything left to film then.
