Step into the Teapot Cafe and you feel you’ve wandered into a Miss Marple novel. For the eccentric little eatery—with its ceramic knick-knacks, cheerful mix-and-match crockery and homely menu—is an unexpected oasis amidst the bustle of Fountain. It’s a great place to linger over a Hot Chocolate and watch the world hurry past. But if you’re looking for rocket leaves and elegant plating, this is not the place for you.

The no-frills menu offers egg dishes, rolls, burgers, sandwiches and soups. It serves a small but eclectic range of main dishes from Dhansak to Thai Green Curry to Paprika Chicken and Mash and Toast.

We start our meal with a Peach Berry Cooler (Rs 55), a rather sweet concoction made from two squashes— a hit with the kids. As is the beautifully toasted hotdog (Rs 75), served with lashings of mayonnaise. The children also loved the waffles (Rs 95)—delicious, if somewhat home-made and chewy—that come with startlingly bright syrups and dollops of cream.

The cheesy pasta with chicken (Rs 155) proves to be fun and filling, if not authentic, while both the grilled sandwiches—chicken-and-egg and mushroom-and-cheese (Rs 70)—are delicious and substantial.

Clearly, the pride of the menu is the ‘Egg Section’. After all, this is a Parsi-run restaurant! So we choose Khari par Eda (Rs 75)—eggs cooked on khari biscuits and garnished with tomatoes and caramelised onions, and Frangipani Egg (Rs 75)—a runny egg on toast, topped with melted cheese and tomato.
