At the golden hour of early evening on Wednesday, one of Lisbon’s most iconic transports, an emblem of charm and possibility, turned into a scene of horror. Portugal’s historic Elevador da Glória funicular suffered a catastrophic derailment, killing at least 15 people and leaving 18 others injured, several critically, according to emergency services and officials.

The beloved yellow and white cable cars are one of the most popular attractions for tourists in Lisbon and date back to the 1800s.
