Gokarna is one of Hinduism's seven most important pilgrimage sites. It is located near the mouth of the River Aghanashini on what was formerly a pristine seashore. The town's culture has evolved as a result of increased tourism, and it is no longer merely a centre of pilgrimage, though significant numbers of Shiva devotees continue to visit for prayer and worship. Because of its peaceful, rustic atmosphere, many younger Western tourists began visiting the area in the 1990s, prompting enterprising residents to open stores and restaurants to capitalise on this.
