Like all dog-lovers, Habib Rehman finds it hard to get one out of his system. All of us who become as irrevocably attached to dogs as we are to our own children find our own ways of coming to terms with their eventual departure. Rehman’s way of dealing with the death of Gori, his spitz of ten years, is to build a house overlooking the spot where Gori lies and to write a tender requiem.
As one would expect of a hotel executive who spends his evenings as a raconteur, Rahman tells it like it is for those who share their lives (and beds!) with dogs. His unabashed sentiment and love for his pet reminds us that many humans and animals have more meaningful relationships than humans between themselves. His book comes at an opportune time, when inhuman municipal authorities are banishing dogs from neighbourhoods.
