A temple festival in Kerala’s Alappuzha district took an alarming turn on Wednesday evening when one of the elephants brought for the celebrations suddenly turned violent, injuring its mahout and damaging several vehicles before being tranquilised by wildlife officials hours later.

The incident unfolded near Nooranad, a town in the district’s eastern belt, where three elephants had been brought as part of the festivities at the Thirumanimangalam Mahadevar temple. Such processions and ceremonial appearances by elephants are a long-standing tradition across many temple festivals in Kerala, drawing large crowds of devotees and onlookers.

According to police officials, the episode took place between 8:30 pm and 9 pm as the elephant was being led towards the temple premises.
